Heather White Speaks to High School Students at Environmental Summit

By: Emilee Rae Hibshman Heather White is a leader in sustainability and an expert on environmental policy. Heather's first lecture was called "Communication 101", which taught about nonverbal and verbal communication, as well as how to present your content. Heather White guides the students in an activity about communication. Heather showed the students tricks that she learned from a TED talk about "power posing." The idea of power posing is to pick a pose that makes you feel confident or powerful, then stand in it for two minutes in private before an interview. She also showed the students how to sit properly for both an interview and a TV appearance! Another speech that Heather gave was titled "Mentors: How to Find Them, How to be One, and How to Listen to your Inner Voice." She gave three main points to both find a mentor, and be one. President of Catawba College Brien Lewis, Founder of the Center of the Environment Dr. John Wear and Heather White, Executive Director of Environmental Working Group  Dr. John Wear, Director of the Center for Environment at Catawba College, welcomed Heather White and Catawba College President Brien Lewis to the 2015 Designing the Future Summit for high school students. President Lewis noted that Catawba College is an award-winning green college. The college is currently working on a solar panel project which is the largest academic solar panel project in the state of North Carolina. Panels on top of campus buildings will save money and resources over the years which is good for all of us. Some other projects Lewis mentioned were the sustainable garden on campus and a bike share program for students. Getting Ready to Redesign the Future - Summit Workshop

Dr. John Wear meets with counselors, staff, and faculty to prepare for Redesigning Our Future - a summer environmental summit for high school students across the United States. It's an early morning at the Center for the Environment as everyone goes over last minute details while enjoying coffee, cake, and fruit. Counselor Jenn is a recent graduate in Environmental Science. She likes the coffee cake and is looking forward to meeting the summit students. Counselor Eli is a sophomore in Environmental Science, and Counselor David is an alumnus who teaches classes at RCCC. Counselor Ka'Shara will be working with the "Environmental education through Theatre" focus group and Professor Linda Kesler will be coordinating the "What We Have Learned" festival on the final day of the summit.
