Focus Group Favorites

During lunch, on Thursday, some campers answered questions about their favorite parts of the Stanback Reserve and the summit so far.

Holly Kuhn - Backbone for Conservation
A. "My favorite part was going on the trails and looking at all the wildlife there."
B. "Going to our focus groups and studying everything that we have our interests in."

 Becan Hennighan - Backbone for Conservation
A. "The variety of plants and animals that live there and the sheer beauty of the preserve itself."
B. "Going out into the preserve and learning about the various animals that live in it."

 Amanda Williamson - Backbone for conservation
A. "When we get to actually see and hold the birds as well as walk through the mud to set up turtle traps." "Its just so beautiful and you just feel one with nature."
B. "Meeting new & interesting people and going through the preserve to catch, tag and track different animals."

Danny Woomer - Stories In Support Of Your Cause
A."The Lake and Ponds."
B. "The focus groups, they were fun."

 A and B: "It’s easy to work with the Environmental Summit students because they are so
engaged and excited." "I learn from the Summit students and feed off their energy & enthusiasm for making a difference for our planet."

A and B: "I liked boating in the lake at the preserve. I also enjoyed geocaching using the GPS’s."

Emily Clancey - Invasive Alien Plants and Animals
A:"My favorite part of the preserve is probably the lake and the creek." "You can find clams in each one and turtles & ducks in the lake." "I also went out on the lake in a kayak, which was a very fun experience."  
B:"My favorite part of the summit so far was going to the the preserve in the creek and lake." "We got to walking knee-deep in the water and sifted through the mud for clams." "We got really dirty and wet, but that made it more fun."

John and the field team collecting fish as part of a water quality research project in Bolivia A couple of years ago, Cathy Green and Dr. John Wear, the Center for the Environment’s director of operations and executive director, respectively, decided to go to a café in Durham, NC, after a long day of interviews. They were sipping on coffee when a familiar face approached them to say hello: Summit alumnus and then-Duke University student John Hare-Grogg .  John attended the National Environmental Summit in 2011, its first year, at a time when he still wasn’t sure where he saw his career going. We Did Eat Kudzu at Our Summer Summit

You Will Never Guess What We Are Getting Ready To Do Dr. Jay Bolin and His Invasive Plants and Animals Focus Group Eating Kudzu By Rafaello I went to a unique Discovery Group on Tuesday. It combined poison ivy and deep-frying. (No, we didn't deep-fry the ivy). The discovery session was called "Invasive Species and Biodiversity: Eating the Plant that ate the South!" and was taught by Dr. Jay Bolin, a biology professor here at Catawba College. Dr. Bolin started out the session by talking about specific invasive species , what they are, and how they work. He then told us we were going to go pick some kudzu . After walking for about 15 minutes (of which the last 5 minutes was through a lot of poison ivy), we got to the kudzu. Kudzu is a nasty plant. It is a vine that grows extremely fast, and basically on anything. I saw some kudzu climbing up trees basically everywhere. We picked kudzu (while avoiding the poison ivy that was also everywhere).
